Cheering On Savanna School’s Musical Adventure

Community Impact

Savanna School is a rural school located in the Peace Country approximately one hour North-West of Spirit River, Alberta. For the past few years, our rural school has been lucky enough to offer a Fine Arts program to our students. Our “farm kids” have had the opportunity to learn and play concert band instruments such as, trumpet, flute, trombone, clarinet, saxophone and percussion. They have been working hard and are ready to “hit the road” to perform their new talents. We are in the process of planning a band trip to perform in Jasper, Alberta. The goal is our band students will gain authentic experience in performance and discover new places outside of the Peace Country. Our students will play and perform at approximately 2- 3 venues. They will also take part in tourist attractions and learning opportunities such as hiking, museums and science centers during the trip. By Dawson Co-op supporting us. we are able to fund this opportunity for the students.

How You Can Help

Our program is alway in need of funds for repairs, updated auxiliary/percussion equipment, music, amp, piano tuning, possible purchase of a large scale such as timpani drums, baritone saxophone- expensive but makes a valuable sound addition that our band has not been able to afford. Along with donations to help fund the band trip the following year. Band is an elective course but it requires close to, if not more time, than an academic course. Because band is and elective it can be easy for a student to choose a course that does not required the time, resiliency and effort than other elective options. By providing the opportunity to travel on a band trip is the “carrot” needed to keep the kids working hard and thereby developing a form of intrinsic motivation that will keep them in music for years to come.
