Senior Building Materials Estimator
Dawson Co-op invites applications for the position of Senior Building Materials Estimator to join our team at our Home and Agro Centre, located in Dawson Creek, British Columbia.
The Senior Building Materials Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, comprehensive material estimates and quotations for residential construction projects while providing technical guidance to customers, contractors, and internal team members. The position requires advanced estimating expertise and extensive knowledge of residential construction methods and building material products.
Reporting to the Pro Department Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
• Come to work with a positive and professional approach and attitude
• Serve as a technical advisor for residential builders, contractors, developers, tradespeople, and homeowners
• Develop and maintain strong professional relationships through excellent customer service and technical expertise
• Provide guidance on product selection, building materials, installation methods, and code-compliant solutions
• Review architectural, structural, engineering, and shop drawings, specifications and supporting documentation to prepare complete and accurate material estimates.
• Perform detailed quantity and cost estimates for residential construction projects, including new home construction, renovations, additions, garages, agricultural buildings, decks, and light commercial projects.
• Prepare detailed quotations for framing packages, foundations, roofing systems, windows, doors, insulation, interior finishing materials, and other building products.
• Respond to customer inquiries regarding estimates, construction materials, product availability, and project requirements.
• Verify estimate accuracy, ensure quotations reflect current material pricing, and revise quotations as project scope or customer requirements change
• Coordinate special orders, custom products, and direct shipments.
• Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of full cost estimates on conceptual, design-build or general tender work.
• Prepare materials, and delivery cost estimations necessary to successfully carry out a construction project according to proposals, plans, estimates and specifications.
• Obtain supplier quotations and negotiate pricing for project-specific materials.
• Participate in contractor events, product demonstrations, supplier training sessions, and community initiatives as required.
• Assist in developing estimating standards, procedures, and quality assurance practices.
• Maintain awareness of local market conditions, competitors, and construction activity.
• Support team members by providing technical expertise throughout the sales process.
• Remain knowledgeable of applicable legislation, regulations, and industry standards, including the British Columbia Building Code, Energy Step Code, and municipal building requirements.
• Adhere to all Dawson Co-operative Union policies and procedures.
• Adhere to all Dawson Co-operative Union health and safety standards, per the Health and Safety manual.
• Plan for self development and take initiative to improve own knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
• A diploma or certificate in construction management, building technology, quantity surveying or another related field is strongly preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and residential construction experience may be considered.
• Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience within residential construction, carpentry, building materials, or a related industry.
• Experience estimating projects involving wood-frame residential construction, foundations and concrete systems, windows and doors, exterior building envelope systems, and roofing systems.
• Ability to effectively manage relationships with contractors, builders, vendors, homeowners, and team members.
• Experience preparing quotations for projects of varying size and complexity.
• Comprehensive knowledge of cost estimating, construction terminology, and building regulations is an asset.
• Ability to analyze construction drawings and specifications with a high degree of accuracy, prepare accurate and timely materials estimates, and prioritize multiple projects while meeting competing deadlines.
• Exercise sound judgement, strong mathematical skills, and attention to detail.
• Experience with Microsoft office programs or other construction estimating software is preferred
• The following professional credentials are an asset: Canadian Construction Estimator (CEC), Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS), or Red Seal Carpentry.
• Valid Class 5 Drivers’ License
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Based at our Dawson Creek Home and Agro Centre
• Standard shifts are eight hours, five days per week; with flexible hours as required
• Periodic travel to customer locations, construction sites, or training facilities may be required
• Requires frequent interaction and follow through with Customers, Suppliers, Management, Team Leaders and Team Members
• Occasional exposure to dust, odors, heat, cold, or other environmental conditions
• Occasional lifting of products and materials up to fifty (50) pounds
Compensation and Benefits
• Between $24.81 and $37.22 per hour based on qualifications and experience
