Junior Accountant

Dawson Co-op invites applications for the permanent full-time position of Junior Accountant to join our Administration team in Dawson Creek, BC. The Junior Accountant supports the Finance team by assisting with the preparation, analysis, and maintenance of accurate financial records and reports. This role contributes to the timely completion of period-end and year-end financial statements, reconciles balance sheet accounts, prepares journal entries, and ensures compliance with accounting standards, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.

This role supports financial reporting, balance sheet integrity, audits, budgeting, and variance analysis, while working closely with internal stakeholders to interpret and explain financial results.

Key Job Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation of period end and year-end financial statements
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts, including bank accounts, prepaid expenses, accruals, and other reconciliations
• Assist in ensuring financial reporting complies with relevant accounting standards
• Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, amortization, and other adjustments
• Review general ledger accounts for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness
• Assist with the maintenance of supporting schedules, including fixed assets, inventory, and other key accounts
• Perform variance analysis and provide clear explanations to management
• Ensure compliance with internal policies, procedures, and financial controls
• Serve as the initial finance contact for commodity and department managers, with guidance from the Finance Manager as needed
• Support internal and external auditing requirements, including preparation of working papers and documentation
• Respond to auditor inquiries in a timely and professional manner
• Prepare GST, PST, Motor Fuel Tax and other statutory filings as required
• Support project tracking and financial monitoring
• Perform cost and margin analysis to support profitability assessment and decision-making
• Support inventory analysis and investigations to identify discrepancies, trends, and control issues
• Support special projects and process improvement initiatives; make recommendations to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls
• Work independently on assigned tasks while exercising sound judgment to escalate issues as appropriate
• Ensure an exceptional level of service is provided
• Adhere to and enforce all Dawson Co-operative Union policies and procedures
• Adhere to and enforce all Dawson Co-operative Union health and safety standards per the Health and Safety manual
• Plan for self-development and take initiative to improve own knowledge, skills and abilities
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Business Administration or Commerce with a focus in Accounting or Finance, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Minimum 1-3 years of relevant accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting standards
  • Experience with general ledger, reconciliations, and financial close processes considered an asset
  • Proficiency in accounting systems, with a preference for experience with JD Edwards, and software systems, such as Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Valid Class Five driver’s license with a clean abstract
  • Ability to undergo and receive clearance for a criminal records check
  • Satisfactory credit report / history

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual salary between $51,610 and $77,415 based on qualifications and experience
